10 Top Construction Security Companies in the UK (2026)
A practical shortlist for facilities managers, project managers and commercial decision-makers who need a site protected from groundworks to handover. We compare ten providers by delivery model, published credentials and the type of project each one suits, then show you how to brief, price and verify whichever you choose.
What construction security providers deliver
What is Construction Security?
Construction security is the planned protection of a building site, its workforce, plant, materials and boundaries from the start of works until handover. It combines controlled access at the gate, perimeter patrols, monitored technology and out-of-hours cover, and gives the principal contractor evidence that the necessary steps have been taken to prevent unauthorised access to the site, as CDM 2015 requires.
In practice, construction security services are delivered by SIA-licensed officers working to written assignment instructions, often alongside CCTV towers and alarm response. A good specification changes as the build moves from groundworks to fit-out, and produces a daily record of who came on site, what was checked and what action was taken.
Ten construction security companies worth shortlisting in the UK in 2026 are: Citywide Security Company, Wilson James, G4S, Mitie, VPS Site Security, Kingdom, Clearway, Corps Security, WCCTV and BauWatch.
They split into three delivery models: guard-led (people on the gate and on patrol), technology-led (monitored CCTV towers with remote response) and integrated (both, under one contract). The right choice depends less on the brand and more on three questions: does your site need a person making access decisions, how quickly must someone respond out of hours, and who will own the daily record of what happened.
Citywide is listed first because we publish this guide and because our model, directly managed SIA-licensed guarding with digital activity reporting, is the one we recommend most sites start their comparison from.

The cost of getting site security wrong
Site security is usually bought late and priced as a line item. The losses it prevents are not line items: they arrive as replacement plant, idle trades, missed milestones and higher premiums at renewal.

| Indicator (UK) | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Reported more site crime in the last 12 months | 66.6% | 64% |
| Say crime is more frequent in autumn and winter | 64% | 71.3% |
| Name tool theft as the most common crime | 51.6% | 57% |
| Workers left out of pocket by crime | 33% | 38.7% |
| Report job losses linked to crime | 22.8% | 27.7% |
| Cut security because of budget pressure | 68% | 76% |

What this means for buyers: three in four respondents cut security to protect budgets in the same year that more workers lost money and jobs to crime. That is the opportunity cost in plain sight: the saving on guarding hours is often paid back, with interest, in hire charges, idle labour and delay.

Why prevention beats recovery
Once plant leaves site it rarely comes back, so the economics of construction security are about stopping the first loss, not insuring the second. Pair guarding with asset marking and tracking, such as the CESAR scheme, for the equipment that matters most.

Seven things to know before you compare quotes
- Choose the delivery model before the provider. A busy gate needs a person; a dormant compound may only need a monitored tower and a response plan.
- The principal contractor carries a legal duty. CDM 2015 Regulation 13(4)(b) requires the necessary steps to prevent unauthorised access to the site. Your security contract is part of how you evidence that.
- SIA licensing and ACS approval are different checks. Officers hold individual licences; ACS is a voluntary company-level scheme. Verify both on the official registers, for every bidder.
- Your site is empty most of the week. On a 7am to 6pm weekday programme it is unattended for 113 of 168 hours, so nights, weekends and shutdowns are where the specification needs the most thought.
- Blended models usually win on value. Guards for occupied hours and the gate, technology and patrols for the long tail of unattended hours.
- The record matters as much as the presence. Daily reports with timed rounds and photo evidence protect you in disputes, insurance claims and CDM audits.
- Review the specification at every phase change. Groundworks, frame, fit-out and pre-handover each move the risk to a different place.
How we chose these ten companies
We looked for providers with public, verifiable evidence of construction work in the UK and enough published detail for a buyer to understand what they actually deliver. Each company was reviewed in October 2026 against six criteria:
1. Construction focus
A dedicated construction offer, named projects or construction-specific roles.
2. Delivery model
Guarding, monitored technology or an integrated blend, and how clearly it is explained.
3. Published credentials
ACS, NSI, SSAIB, CHAS, Constructionline and similar, as stated by the provider.
4. Response and reporting
Monitoring arrangements, escalation and the record the client receives.
5. UK coverage
National reach or a clearly defined regional footprint.
6. Buyer fit
Which project size and risk profile the model genuinely suits.
This is a shortlist, not an award. After Citywide, companies are grouped by delivery model so you can compare like with like, rather than ranked best to worst. All credential and scale figures are as published by each company and should be re-verified before contract award.
Editorial disclosure: This guide is published by Citywide Security Company, which appears at number one. That placement reflects our view of how our directly managed guarding model fits the criteria above, and we are glad to have it scrutinised. No company on this list, including Citywide, has paid for inclusion. Buyers should apply the same verification checks to every provider here, including us. To suggest a correction, email contact@citywidesecuritycompany.co.uk.

What each company does well, and what to check
Each profile covers the delivery model, published evidence, who it suits and the question we would ask before signing.
Most construction security failures are not dramatic. They are an unbriefed relief officer on a Saturday night, a gate log nobody reads, or a patrol that was never actually walked. Citywide’s construction site security is built to close those gaps: every assignment runs to written assignment instructions covering approved entrances, contractor and delivery checks, patrol points, keys and escalation contacts, and those instructions are updated as the project changes phase.
Accountability sits with a named account manager rather than a call centre. Officers are SIA-licensed and DBS-checked, with licence status verified before deployment, and relief officers are held to the same standard. Where practical, Citywide keeps regular officers on site so knowledge of the build is not lost at every shift change, with planned replacement cover behind them.
The reporting layer is the differentiator project teams notice first. Citywide’s Digital Activity Reports require location verification and a start-of-shift photo before reporting opens, record scheduled rounds and exceptions, embed photo evidence, and are reviewed internally before the approved PDF reaches the client. That gives site managers a clean, auditable record for CDM files, insurers and dispute resolution.
Delivery model
Static guarding, gatehouse and access control, perimeter patrols, plant and materials protection, overnight, weekend and shutdown cover.
Coverage
London and Greater London, plus Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol and other major UK cities.
Best for
Developers, principal contractors and FM teams who want a responsive guarding partner with clear written duties and a daily evidence trail, from single sites to multi-site portfolios.
What to confirm
As with every bidder, confirm the proposed officer profile, relief arrangements, reporting recipients and how duties will change by phase. Minimum booking is four hours per day and eight hours per week.
Wilson James
Wilson James is one of the few providers whose construction pedigree runs through logistics as well as security. Its site security capability is designed to scale with a project from vacant property and demolition through to handover, with SIA-licensed officers running gatehouse operations, verifying IDs and deliveries, and patrolling. The company aligns security with access rules, pedestrian segregation and delivery management, so gate control helps the programme rather than queuing it.
With more than 35 years in the market, Wilson James reports a team of over 5,000 people and early involvement in projects including the Jubilee Line Extension. On congested urban schemes where the gate is also the logistics bottleneck, that combined capability is hard to replicate.
Best for
Large, complex or high-profile urban projects where security and construction logistics need one owner.
What to confirm
Whether your project is large enough to justify the integrated model, and how security and logistics responsibilities are split in the contract.
G4S (Allied Universal)
G4S has provided security for the construction of Hinkley Point C since 2015 under a ten-year contract, and in 2023 won an interim security contract for Sizewell C. Its roles on those programmes include security risk management, vulnerability assessments and support for contractor security plans, which shows the depth it brings to nationally significant builds. G4S became part of Allied Universal in 2021.
Best for
Nuclear, energy and critical national infrastructure construction where vetting depth and security risk management matter as much as the gate.
What to confirm
For a standard commercial or residential build, ask how a provider built for megaprojects will resource and supervise a single mid-sized site.

Mitie
Mitie describes itself as the UK’s largest intelligence-led security company, with more than 25,000 security personnel, 24/7 operations centres and an intelligence hub of over 200 UK specialists. It does not publish a dedicated construction-sector page, but its guarding appears on construction-adjacent work, including pre-handover security during construction works at Shard Place in London.
The strongest fit is a developer or owner already using Mitie for facilities management, where security can carry through practical completion into occupation without a supplier change.
Best for
Large estates and developments moving from construction into operation under an existing FM relationship.
What to confirm
Mitie’s investor pages reference a recommended cash offer from OCS. Ask how any ownership change could affect account management and contract terms over your build programme.

VPS Site Security
VPS is a temporary-security specialist that combines its own CCTV towers with guarding and mobile response. VPS Site Security and its sister business Nexus state ACS approval for Security Guarding, Key Holding and CCTV, and VPS lists CHAS, Constructionline, UKAS ISO 9001, SafeContractor and RISQS among its accreditations. Its published work includes towers and patrols on highways schemes and monitored CCTV on the Crossrail works at Paddington.
Best for
Large, remote or linear sites, such as highways and infrastructure, where towers can cover ground that guards cannot.
What to confirm
Response times to tower activations at your postcode, and who attends when an alarm is verified.
Source: VPS Group
Kingdom
Kingdom, founded in 1993, reports more than 11,500 colleagues and over £300m in revenue. Following its September 2026 ACS assessment, the company states it remains among the top 1% of UK security providers. Its Kingdom Systems arm supplies temporary CCTV and AI detection towers backed by an NSI Gold accredited monitoring desk and SIA-licensed mobile response, and lists SSAIB, CHAS and SafeContractor. Kingdom also recruits guards for live construction projects, such as the Stornoway Deep Water Terminal.
Best for
Contractors with several sites who want guarding and monitored technology from one supplier.
What to confirm
Check the scope of ACS approval on the SIA register, and whether guarding and systems are managed as one account.
Sources: Kingdom Systems, Kingdom ACS 2026, Kingdom Stornoway role
Clearway
Clearway brings more than 35 years in UK security and a layered approach: CCTV towers, video-verified alarms, access control, manned guarding and K9 units for higher-risk sites. Monitoring runs through its NSI Gold accredited centre, and regional depots support construction projects in London, the Midlands, Yorkshire, the North West and Scotland.
Best for
Regional developments wanting several layers of protection from one supplier.
What to confirm
Which layers are included in the quoted price and which are optional extras.

Corps Security
Corps Security, established in 1859 and run as a social enterprise, was named Guarding Company of the Year at the 2026 Fire & Security Matters Awards. In partnership with Security Drone Group it offers drone surveillance that lists construction sites among its uses, and one published trial completed a full perimeter check in six minutes.
Best for
Large open sites, and public-sector or framework tenders that score social value.
What to confirm
Drone operating permissions near your site, and how drone alerts are integrated with guard response.

WCCTV
WCCTV specialises in rapid-deployment CCTV towers for construction, with more than 1,000 towers deployed nationwide, seven UK offices and alarm monitoring through NSI Gold accredited partners. Its managed service covers hire, installation, maintenance, monitoring and mobile keyholding response, and its towers can also produce time-lapse footage for project records. WCCTV states that monitored towers can cut security costs by up to 88% compared with guarding; treat that as a vendor claim to test against your own site.
Best for
Unattended compounds and long out-of-hours periods where no gate decisions are needed.
What to confirm
Who controls access during working hours, since towers detect and deter but do not check contractors in.
Source: WCCTV construction CCTV
BauWatch
BauWatch offers monitored CCTV towers across the UK with installation within 48 hours, an NSI Gold alarm receiving centre, solar and wired options with battery backup, and flexible hire with no upfront investment. It reports more than 17 years of site security experience and operations in 12 countries, and lists Constructionline Gold among its accreditations.
Best for
Sites that need deterrence and monitoring in place within days.
What to confirm
Who responds on the ground after a verified activation, and what that costs per call-out.

Guards, towers or both: which fits your site?
Your site is empty two-thirds of the week
On a standard 7am to 6pm weekday programme, a site is staffed for 55 hours and unattended for 113 of the 168 hours in a week. Those unattended hours are where the security specification matters most.
| Site need | Static guarding | Mobile patrols | Monitored towers | Blended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contractor and delivery checks at the gate | Strong | Weak | Weak | Strong |
| Wide perimeter or remote compound | Moderate | Moderate | Strong | Strong |
| Long unattended periods (nights, shutdowns) | Strong, highest cost | Moderate | Strong | Strong |
| Immediate physical intervention | Strong | Depends on timing | Depends on response | Strong |
| Auditable daily record | Strong with digital reports | Moderate | Strong for events | Strong |
| Fast mobilisation | Moderate | Strong | Strong | Moderate |
Second-order effect to plan for: moving to towers alone shifts work back to your site team, who must then own morning unlocks, contractor sign-in and key control. If nobody owns those tasks, the saving on guarding hours is often spent on supervisor time and delay. Citywide can run the gate and patrols while a tower provider covers the perimeter; see our mobile and static guarding options.
What each decision-maker should prioritise
Facilities managers
- Continuity from build into occupation: who secures the building at practical completion?
- Keyholding, alarm response and vacant-area patrols during snagging.
- One reporting format your team can read without retraining.
Project and site managers
- Gate procedures that keep deliveries and trades moving at 7am.
- Written assignment instructions you sign off and update by phase.
- Daily reports with timed rounds and photos for the site file.
See our digital reporting.
Commercial and procurement leads
- Total cost of protection, not headline hourly rate.
- Verified ACS, insurance and legal entity before award.
- Exit terms and variation rates as the programme changes.

The legal and licensing checks behind every appointment
CDM 2015, Regulation 13(4)(b)
The principal contractor must ensure the necessary steps are taken to prevent access by unauthorised persons to the construction site. Security does not replace your safety management, but the contract, assignment instructions and reports form part of the evidence that you met this duty. Read the regulation on legislation.gov.uk.
Occupiers’ Liability Act 1984
Occupiers can owe a duty of care to trespassers, including children, where they know of a danger and of people likely to come near it. Construction sites are full of such dangers, which is why secure boundaries and out-of-hours checks matter beyond theft. The HSE guidance on protecting the public sets out practical expectations.
Individual SIA licences
Officers carrying out licensable guarding duties under contract need the correct SIA licence. Check any named officer on the official licence checker. Our guide to SIA licence types explains the categories.
Company ACS approval
The SIA Approved Contractor Scheme is voluntary and applies to specified activities. If your tender requires it, verify the exact legal entity and approved activities on the SIA register for every bidder.
What construction site security costs in 2026
There is no regulated tariff. The ranges below are the London planning ranges from our 2026 security guard cost guide, before VAT. Rates elsewhere in the UK vary with local labour markets, so use them as a benchmark and ask every bidder for an itemised quote. The statutory National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 per hour from April 2026, and a sustainable charge rate must also fund employer costs, relief cover, supervision and insurance.
| Service | Indicative planning range | Main cost drivers |
|---|---|---|
| Construction or higher-risk site guarding | £23 to £34+ per hour | Out-of-hours work, patrol area, hazards, gate duties |
| Static guarding, nights or weekends | £24 to £34 per hour | Unsociable hours, lone-working controls, availability |
| Mobile patrol | £25 to £50 per visit | Visit length, frequency, route and response terms |
| Keyholding and alarm response | Retainer plus call-out fee | Location, alarm history, response time |
| Monitored CCTV towers | Quoted per tower, per week or month | Number of towers, monitoring level, response included |
Worked examples (illustrative, before VAT)
| Scenario | Hours or visits | Illustrative rate | Weekly | Avg monthly | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Out-of-hours guarding: 6pm to 7am weekdays plus full weekends | 113 hours | £25/hr | £2,825 | £12,242 | £146,900 |
| Continuous 24/7 static guarding, one officer | 168 hours | £27/hr | £4,536 | £19,656 | £235,872 |
| Two mobile patrol visits every night | 14 visits | £35/visit | £490 | £2,123 | £25,480 |
Opportunity cost lens: the gap between the first and third rows is roughly £120,000 a year. That money only buys value if a person on site changes the outcome, for example on a compound holding high-value plant or a site with recent break-ins. On a quiet, well-fenced site, a blend of patrols and monitored technology may protect the same assets for a fraction of the cost, freeing budget for gate control during working hours where a person makes the biggest difference.
Monthly figures use weekly cost × 52 ÷ 12. Examples are not quotations and exclude bank-holiday uplifts, equipment, mobilisation and call-out charges.
Five decisions that separate a good contract from a painful one
Map risk by hour, not by site
List when the site is occupied, when it is empty and where the value sits at each point. Price guarding for the hours that need a person and technology for the rest.
Write the duties before you ask for prices
Entrances, deliveries, patrol routes, keys, alarms and escalation contacts. Give every bidder the same brief so quotes are comparable.
Ask who covers the Saturday night shift
Relief cover is where most guarding contracts fail. Ask how absences are filled, how relief officers are briefed and who is told.
Insist on a sample report
Ask each bidder for a real or test daily report. If it is a handwritten log or a generic template, that is what you will receive for the life of the contract.
Build in phase reviews
Agree review points at groundworks, frame, fit-out and pre-handover, with rates for adding or removing hours so changes do not trigger renegotiation.
How risk moves through the build
| Phase | Where the risk sits | Typical emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Site set-up and groundworks | Plant, fuel, open boundaries, changing vehicle routes | Perimeter, compound checks, out-of-hours cover |
| Main structure | Materials, multiple trades, scaffold access | Gate control, contractor checks, patrols |
| Fit-out | Cabling, M&E kit, tools, high-value finishes | Internal access control, storeroom checks |
| Practical completion and handover | Finished areas, keys, snagging access, vacancy | Keyholding, vacant property patrols, alarm response |
15 checks before you appoint a construction security company
| # | Check | What to confirm in writing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | SIA licensing | Each officer holds the correct current licence for the duties. |
| 2 | ACS status | If required, the bidding legal entity and approved activities on the SIA register. |
| 3 | Vetting | How identity, right to work and employment history are screened. |
| 4 | Insurance | Current public and employers’ liability certificates matching the contracting entity. |
| 5 | Assignment instructions | Site-specific duties, signed off by you and updated by phase. |
| 6 | Gate procedure | Contractor, visitor, vehicle and delivery checks, and who decides on exceptions. |
| 7 | Patrol evidence | How rounds are verified, timed and recorded. |
| 8 | Daily reporting | Format, recipients, photo evidence and a sample report. |
| 9 | Escalation | Incident thresholds, response times and out-of-hours contacts. |
| 10 | Relief cover | How absences are filled and briefed, to the same licence and vetting standard. |
| 11 | Supervision | Named account manager and review frequency. |
| 12 | Technology responsibilities | Who monitors CCTV or towers, who responds and who holds footage. |
| 13 | Keys and alarms | Custody, key register and alarm response procedure. |
| 14 | Variations | Rates for adding or reducing hours as the programme changes. |
| 15 | Commercial terms | Minimum bookings, premiums, notice period and exit terms. |
Any bidder unable to answer all fifteen in writing should be reconsidered. Our guide to reducing theft, trespass and delay goes deeper on each.
Construction security companies in the UK: common questions
Which are the top construction security companies in the UK?
This guide shortlists Citywide Security Company, Wilson James, G4S, Mitie, VPS Site Security, Kingdom, Clearway, Corps Security, WCCTV and BauWatch. They cover guard-led, technology-led and integrated delivery models, so the right choice depends on your site’s risk, hours and access needs.
Do construction site security guards need an SIA licence?
Officers carrying out licensable security guarding under contract need the appropriate SIA licence for their duties. You can check any officer on the official GOV.UK licence checker.
What is the difference between an SIA licence and ACS approval?
The SIA licenses individuals. The Approved Contractor Scheme is a voluntary quality scheme for security companies and applies to specified activities. Verify both separately.
Are CCTV towers cheaper than security guards?
For long unattended periods, monitored towers usually cost less per protected hour. They do not check contractors in or make decisions at the gate, so most active sites still need people during working hours.
What does the law require of a principal contractor?
Under CDM 2015 Regulation 13(4)(b), the principal contractor must ensure the necessary steps are taken to prevent unauthorised access to the site. Security arrangements and records help evidence that duty.
How much does construction site security cost?
London planning ranges for construction guarding run from about £23 to £34+ per hour before VAT, with mobile patrols around £25 to £50 per visit. Final prices depend on hours, duties, location and risk.
How quickly can construction security be mobilised?
Technology providers often install towers within days. Guarding depends on officer availability, induction and site readiness, so ask each provider to confirm a start time in writing for your postcode.
Should one company cover several of our sites?
It can simplify reporting and invoicing, but ask how relief cover, supervision and escalation work at each address rather than assuming one contract solves every local issue.
What should a daily activity report include?
Shift times, completed rounds, exceptions, visitors and deliveries, incidents, actions taken, people notified, photo evidence and handover notes for the next shift.
Where can I see Citywide’s construction security service?
Our construction site security page sets out duties, phases, reporting and mobilisation, and our London hub covers coverage across the capital. You can request a site-specific quote from either.
